Encourage children to be familiar with money and how to count. To begin, they can start to count the number of pennies or cash notes there are. As they get more confident, they can play pretend and work out how much things cost. Let's go shopping! Let's put some play money into our wallet and keep the rest for the shop keeper. Pick a card with the picture of what you would like to buy and see how much it costs. Look at the play coins and banknotes in your wallet - work out which ones to use to pay and see if you can work out how much change the shopkeeper needs to give you too.

Counting and doing simple sums helps boost numeracy skills and as your child gets more confident, they will develop imagination skills as they play.
