Racing car simulation titles are a staple of the video game world. With the introduction of the PlayStation 4 console, developers were eager to pursue higher resolutions and take advantage of next-gen processing power. The initial arrival of DriveClub on PS4 as an exclusive for the console (produced by developer Evolution Studios) was met with some criticism but also a fair share of praise.

DriveClub offers what are essentially short-lived thrills in an otherwise thrilling environment – car racing. Players going the single-player tour route face off head-to-head against a number of AI drivers. The difficulty level rises after initial races, increasing the challenge and requiring more refined manoeuvring techniques of the faster cars. Racing a hot Ferrari down tight corridors or around short bends is a slick experience while learning just how each of them handles adds to the learning curve.

Barrelling down a few breathtaking courses, such as one in Norway, is a visually stunning hook – graphics in 1080p high definition and cool weather effects are positives – but the overall presentation leans closer to a rather tame automotive affair. In terms of playability, the AI tends to be unforgiving at times whilst collisions create some frustration as top speeds get reduced much too quickly and often.

The lack of under-the-hood customisation options in DriveClub can translate to slightly less enthusiasm for some players, yet custom paint jobs do exist – nothing comes close to the feeling of racing a car that completely overshadows your challenger's artistic choice. This game supports multiplayer; joining public races is a possibility but also a challenge that ideally ramps up your competitive instincts. The online competitive mode where players race against each other is not without some hiccups, such as server issues.

Review summary: Visuals are heavily praised, from the cars and their interiors to the tracks and locations themselves. Benefits of the "social" side of the game are encouraged and adding to the best part of the title. Realistic and beauty of the details while racing is authentic and a great experience, but it stil can't reach that of Gran Turismo 6. AI collisions are criticised.

Review summary: The tester has particular praise for the online challenge mode and the handling and visuals also impress. There is something lacking that gives the game an unfinished feel and the campaigns are repetitive.

Review summary: Game comes off as hard to love, just simple without offering more. Driving clubs themselves are worth their while and effective, especially with in-race challenges. AI driver performance criticised for causing so many crashes, losing you points. This forced the driver to be seek faster cars instead of driving better to beat them. Lack of customisation also a negative.

Review summary: Game's one-dimensional nature is criticized, as it simply does not have enough nuance to keep players entertained for long enough. Unlike Forza and Gran Turismo there is no playing mechanic - you just sit in the cars and drive. Tracks are impressive, as well as the growing challenges as you progress, but overall grippiness of the cars is frustrating. The game punishes you severely for making mistakes, and AI drivers contribute to this.

Review summary: The visually stunning nature of the game is praised, as well as the arcade nature of the vehicles and handling. The social element adds a great deal to DriveClub, as well as the particular Face-Offs feature of the thing. However, the game's distinct lack of personality and not-quite nature can grate. The social features for all their advertising are not too different from rival games, and so there is nothing very ingenuitive about it.
