Product Description

Perfect timing - 2020's first runaway success hits the spot. This simulation game teaches you how to survive and thrive on a desert island.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - The Lowdown

  • 1-8 players possible
  • Available on Nintendo Switch
  • From the age of 3 years and up

The Adventure Continues

How do you explain the appeal of Animal Crossing to someone? "Well it's kind of like Pokémon, but without the battles" you say.

"But the battles are the best part!" they say.

"Yeah but this is somehow....better?"

"In what way?"

"It's like The Sims, but more...pure."

This is the fifth instalment of the game, which brings together a few humans and a flock of animals, who also stand on two legs and have the ability to speak albeit like slightly deeper-voiced versions of Sooty and Sweep. In the first games, Nintendo decided to explore a village setting, a wild environment or a large city. For New Horizons, the game stands out immediately by exploring a world that's more enclosed than ever: a desert island.

The Spirit of Cooperation

A game can be played in single player mode or with up to 8 players. Each player is first asked to choose a human-faced character to represent them. In the second step, each player can choose two animal characters who will be their sidekicks. Each team formed in this way must travel around the island using a Nookphone. This special phone was created by Nook Inc, the same company that gave all the little characters a ticket to this paradise. Personally I think they missed a trick by not calling the phone a "Nookia", but I suppose there were copyright issues there.

Same Challenge, Still Great

Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Switch keeps the same winning format as the previous games - each trio's mission is to find useful tools and materials to build a house, customise it and organise a pleasant life. You will also have to find food to eat. One of the new features of this fifth scenario is the home decorating and crafting aspect. In previous games, only the construction really mattered.

Holiday Time

During their search, islanders will also be able to discover accessories such as tents, parasols and surfboards. These items can be used for your leisure time and to have "a real life": just like real life, the best players are those who manage to manage their time well between construction work and downtime.

Verdict

While being safe to play and simple enough for children from the age of 3 and up, the winning formula and relative lack of danger make this almost universally appealling, attracting players from all age groups, particularly millenials. In a similar way to FIFA 21, Animal Crossing: New Horizons attracts a huge amount of casual and even non-gamers, such is its broad appeal, popularity, and the indescribable peace that it brings to players. Your adventures with the Nooks are a smoothing balm, a lighthouse of calm in these worrying times.

You can be very creative on the island. Houses change and interior decoration. Unfortunately, too few innovations over the years and therefore boring at some point.
Advantages: Long-term play. It can always be played, Share online with others.
    Disadvantages: Could come more innovations.

In the game you can give free rein to your creativity. Through the always new tasks, you always have new goals. Playing through, so to speak, is not possible.
    Advantages: Long playing pleasure
    Disadvantages: None Known

Have had the game in my possession for a year now and still play it a lot and joyfully. It's just fun to keep expanding and designing your island. Unfortunately I find that there is very little new content in the game.
    Advantages: A lot of fun
    Disadvantages: Little new content

Animal crossing new horizons is really a very nice game where you can more or less build your own island. Everything is very nicely designed and there is a lot to do overall. Unfortunately, to achieve everything you have to play every day, because you can't achieve so much in one day.
    Advantages: Graphic, Scope, Creativity
    Disadvantages: Long-term motivation

Nice game but you're busy for an hour a day and then have to wait for the next day. It takes quite a long time to complete a task.
Advantages: Easy control, Many possibilities to design
    Disadvantages: Too durable
